1300年左右進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)，直接源自古法語(yǔ)的bloc，意為木材，樹(shù)干；最初源自中世紀(jì)荷蘭語(yǔ)的bloc，意為樹(shù)干。

block是可數(shù)名詞,基本意思是指帶有直邊由較硬材料構(gòu)成的長(zhǎng)方形的塊狀物，如木塊、石塊或其他固體材料,引申則指高大的建筑物,即大廈、大樓等。在美國(guó), block是指四面是馬路的一塊街區(qū),或街區(qū)之間的距離; 在澳大利亞則指鬧市或繁華的大馬路。
block用作單位詞,其前可加some等修飾。block修飾不可數(shù)名詞時(shí),表示復(fù)數(shù)意義的名詞不變,只需將block變?yōu)?em>blocks; 修飾可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)時(shí), block和所修飾的名詞都須變成復(fù)數(shù)。
block用于比喻,作“障礙,障礙物”解時(shí),是可數(shù)名詞。泛指“阻塞；堵住”多用單數(shù)形式，表示多次或多處阻塞時(shí)用復(fù)數(shù)形式。

在美國(guó)block指四面鄰街的一塊地或建筑群，稱(chēng)為一個(gè)街區(qū)，也可指這樣一個(gè)block的每一邊，即兩條平行街道之間的一段路。
