- 14世紀(jì)中期進(jìn)入英語，直接源自古法語的continuer；最初源自古典拉丁語的continuare，意為制作或連續(xù)的。
用法辨析
- continue的基本意思是“繼續(xù)”,指動(dòng)作或狀態(tài)的繼續(xù)或持續(xù)不中斷?？杀硎疽患乱恢痹谧?中間沒有停歇; 也可以表示中間有一個(gè)中斷,又接著做下去。
- continue可用作不及物動(dòng)詞,也可用作及物動(dòng)詞。用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)可接名詞、動(dòng)名詞、動(dòng)詞不定式或that從句作賓語,也可以接as短語充當(dāng)補(bǔ)足語的復(fù)合賓語。continue還可引出直接引語。
- continue還可用作系動(dòng)詞,接(to be+) adj. 或as+ n. 作表語, to be?？梢允÷?。
- still continue是個(gè)很多余的用法，應(yīng)該避免，去掉still，用continue就可以了；
- continue一般后面常接不定式，比較普遍，而很少用現(xiàn)在分詞。不過在作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)，把現(xiàn)在分詞看做動(dòng)名詞也是可以的。The baby continued to cry all night. 這個(gè)嬰兒一晚上都在哭。
- continue后面接不定式或者現(xiàn)在分詞，都解釋為“不停地……”而不是“停止后繼續(xù)……”的意思。The baby continued to cry (或crying) all night. 句子不可改為The baby continued to cry (或 crying) at eleven o'clock。
- continue解釋為“(在停止后）繼續(xù)……”的時(shí)候，后接的賓語常有story， article， narrative，discourse，journey等。The author will continue the story in another volume. 這個(gè)作加會(huì)在另一冊(cè)中繼續(xù)這個(gè)故事。
- continue作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)，后常接表語。Her temper continued uncertain. 她的脾氣持續(xù)不穩(wěn)定。
