常用用法

number用作動詞意思是“數(shù),算”,引申可作“編號”“加號碼于…”“總共,共計”等解。
number可用作及物動詞,也可用作不及物動詞。用作及物動詞時接名詞或代詞作賓語。
number作數(shù)數(shù)的“數(shù)”解,其賓語只能是復(fù)數(shù)名詞。number作“算作”解時可接as〔among,with〕引起的介詞短語作賓語補足語。
number作“總共”解時可用作系動詞,接表示數(shù)量的名詞作表語。

這兩個詞都表示“數(shù)量”。其區(qū)別在于:前者表示“數(shù)”,與復(fù)數(shù)名詞或代詞連用; 而后者表示“量”,與不可數(shù)名詞連用。例如:
A small number of people believe in ghosts.只有少數(shù)人相信有鬼。
A large amount of money was spent on books.一大筆錢花在了購買圖書上。

這組詞(組)都表示“許多”的意思。其區(qū)別在于:many是普通用語,其后只能接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù); many a是書面用語,后接單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞,當修飾主語時謂語動詞要用單數(shù)形式; much是普通用語,是對量和程度而言的,只能修飾不可數(shù)名詞; a number of可用來修可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù); a lot of和lots of既可接可數(shù)名詞,也可接不可數(shù)名詞,多用于肯定句。a great deal of后接不可數(shù)名詞,謂語動詞用單數(shù),且常用于肯定句中。例如:

這兩個短語的用法不同：前者可跟可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞,而后者只可跟復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞。例如:
A part of the students in our class are from the countryside.我們班有一部分學(xué)生來自農(nóng)村。
A part of the milk in the bottle has been drunk.瓶中的牛奶有一部分已經(jīng)喝了。

aggregate指把數(shù)目的各個部分加在一起；amount指累積的結(jié)果；number指數(shù)字或東西相加所得的總數(shù)；sum指最后的總結(jié)果，表示截至現(xiàn)在的總數(shù), 還有增加的可能；total和whole都指合計的結(jié)果的全體，total常指大的數(shù)量，whole也含有各部分總和的意味。quantity主要表示物質(zhì)的量。

1.count的含義是“數(shù)數(shù)目”; reckon則側(cè)重“計算”。例如:
I counted the broken windows and found there were eight.
我數(shù)了數(shù)破損的窗戶,共有八個。
We'll have to reckon the cost of it.
我們得計算它的成本。
2.count和reckon都有“認為”之義,但reckon則更側(cè)重于“推定”“公認”,指對事件全面權(quán)衡。例如:

4.count和reckon多用于口語或日常生活; calculate多用于自然科學(xué)、生產(chǎn)部門或需要專門計算的場合。例如:

5.count既可用作動詞,也可用作名詞；而calculate和reckon只能用作動詞。
