常用用法
- number的基本意思是“數(shù)字”,引申可作“編號,電話號碼,房間號碼”解,是可數(shù)名詞。常縮寫爲No.或no.。
- number也可作“數(shù)目,數(shù)量”解,其後常與介詞of連用,引申可表示語法上名詞或動詞的“數(shù)”或“數(shù)詞”。
- number的單數(shù)形式也可指“一群人,一幫人”。
- number還可指襍志的“一期”或通俗音樂、爵士音樂等的“一首樂曲”,是可數(shù)名詞。
- 在俚語中, number還有“喜愛的物品”的意思。

- 兩者意思不同:a number of的意思是“許多”,相儅於many; the number of的意思是“數(shù)目”,不能作脩飾語。
- 這兩個詞都表示“數(shù)量”。其區(qū)別在於:前者表示“數(shù)”,與複數(shù)名詞或代詞連用; 而後者表示“量”,與不可數(shù)名詞連用。例如:
